Developed for the Saint Joseph de Tivoli school complex in Bordeaux, this project involves the thorough restructuring of the school’s main entrance. Daily access and the flow of students and staff are improved by the addition of a walkway that crosses the existing courtyard. Our design includes a new reception hall for the school, along with classrooms, reception rooms, and additional service areas. Some of the rooms in the existing buildings were refurbished and transformed to accommodate new uses. The ground-floor façade facing the street was given a new cut-stone surface that is more contemporary and reflective of the dynamic nature of this school complex.

Construction

Construction took place on an occupied site with limited access. This required careful planning to take full advantage of the students’ summer vacation in order to complete the project by the time they returned in the fall. The new building was inserted into the fully cleared courtyard.

Plan

The original layout, radiating outward from the courtyard, shaped our approach, especially in developing a circulation path that connects the portico to the building overlooking the schoolyard.

The new construction, inserted into the centre of the courtyard, supports the walkway leading to the building, and a portion of it is fully landscaped.

Interior

The reception of students, their parents, and the staff has been improved with the addition of a lobby and reception spaces.
